A food blogger’s honest review of the Home Chef food delivery service! What to expect, plus photos and reviews of meals included!
Recently I was gifted a coupon code to Home Chef to order a few meals and I couldn’t wait to try them! I’ve already tried and reviewed Blue Apron so I was excited to include a Home Chef review on the blog as well!
If you’re not familiar with Home Chef, they’re a food delivery service that will deliver all of the ingredients necessary to make dinner at home. You are able to choose how many meals you would like per week (2-6) and can hand pick your meals.
Just as with Blue Apron, your first decision is what size of plan you need.

- 4-Person plan
- 6-Person plan
Each meal costs $9.95 per serving and you also have the option of a fruit/smoothie basket you can add on at $4.95 each. We found that most meals were enough to leave leftovers for both of us, so really each meal was two nights of dinner for us!
Your next decision is what type of food preferences you may have.
- You can choose what types of food you prefer: meat, seafood or vegetarian. You can choose any and/or all of these options. Then you can choose which ingredients you want to avoid from the list below:

Another nice thing about Home Chef is that they let you specify whether you’re looking for low calorie or low carb meals. Perfect for all of our new healthy resolutions! 🙂
Next up, pick your delivery date. All of the meals will be delivered on the same day, in one giant, fresh food filled box! You can choose either:
These were the dates available in my location, I am not sure if they vary by location or not, so if you know, let me know!
Finally, you will put in your delivery and payment information. Once you sign up, you will be set on weekly recurring charges and deliveries. You can choose to skip a delivery at any time, but you have to select this by Friday at noon before your delivery week. If you don’t, you will automatically be charged and your food will be shipped that next week!
Once you are signed up, you can review the meals that were selected for delivery, and you even have the option to change them, if you wish! While you’re not able to customize each meal individually (i.e. swap out ingredients), it is nice to be able to choose your own meals in case the ones they choose don’t speak to you. Okay, now that everything is ordered let’s move on to delivery day!
A huge convenience of Home Chef is that you don’t have to be home for your food delivery. They’ll leave it at your home in a box that is fully insulated with ice packs. Plus, everything is recyclable so at the end of the week you can do your good deed and recycle all of the materials!As you can see the food is fully wrapped, insulated, and surrounded with ice packs, to ensure your food stays fresh even in the warmest of months!The meals are delivered individually packaged (although the meat is together), so when you’re ready to cook you just grab the bag out of your fridge, grab the recipe, and get to cooking. Meals are designed to be prepped within 30 minutes so they’re perfect for weeknight dinners! Plus, the ingredients are all pre-portioned so even if you’re exhausted from your day you can still easily whip dinner together.Our first meal was swiss fondue burgers with onion jam and parsley fries. This was actually our 3 year anniversary dinner because the meals happened to be delivered that week. So rather than go out to a fancy restaurant we poured some wine and teamed up to make a phenomenal dinner! (At only $9.95 per serving!) 🙂Guys. These burgers. OMG. I would buy Home Chef again JUST to get these burgers. I’ve been praising them to everyone! I still use the technique I learned in this recipe to make some swiss fondue topping for burgers, and the sauce inspired my “Magic Sauce” that I paired with my butternut squash fries. They reminded me of Red Robin burgers, all fancy and delicious and such. Who needs to go out to get a burger when you can make them at home?! (Plus, the wine is cheaper at home 🙂 )Our second meal was ribeye steak burrito bowls with pico de gallo. I was excited about these because 1. We love steak. and 2. I’m obsessed with Mexican food so I’m always looking for new recipes and tips on how to make it more authentic.These ingredients were so fun to prep! I felt healthier just slicing them up! So many veggies!My favorite part of this was the tortilla bowl. I’ve never made my own bowls but they were so easy and fun for dinner! The filling itself was so-so; this dish wasn’t nearly as good as the burgers that we obsessed over. Andrew felt he could have made this dish better on his own but now we have the idea to do so!So fun fact about meal delivery programs: you have to remember to cancel them if you don’t want meals to keep coming every week. I discovered this when a box of food showed up at my house (juuust kidding, they email you to tell you it was shipped so I knew :P). I wasn’t entirely mad about it because I had no dinners planned for the week yet so it kind of worked out perfectly. And they were meals I actually would have chosen to eat which was even better!
Our first meal from this delivery was apple gouda smothered chicken with smoky brussels sprouts. Chicken with brussels sprouts is one of our dinner staples and I don’t know why I’ve never thought about smothering it with gouda! From now on I will consider smothering everything in gouda! (In moderation of course. I have resolutions, after all!) This meal was SO easy to prep and cook, which is always appreciated on a busy week night! I mean just look at that. Protein, veggies, fruit, dairy. It’s the perfect package. The gouda was too much for Andrew since he’s not a huge fan of smothering cheese, so you know what that meant…..double cheese for me! 🙂 Our last meal was a classic french green peppercorn pork tenderloin with mashed carrots and roasted asparagus. I didn’t really understand the concept of mashing the carrots rather than eating them whole but I trusted the process and I’m glad I did because I discovered how good mashed carrots are! (Toddler me might have disagreed but I love them now!) My absolute favorite part of this dish was this demi-glace sauce! I’ve never had anything like it and it was AMAZINGGGG. I would eat this on anything. Any. Thingggg. This meal was also delicious and a fully packed nutritious meal. It was also incredibly filling. But between those buttery mashed carrots and a perfectly seasoned demi-glace sauce you better believe those leftovers didn’t last long!
Overall we enjoyed the Home Chef experience and thought that the food quality and recipes were better than Blue Apron’s (see my review here!). (Especially the burgers and the pork tenderloin. I highly recommend those meals!)
